JANEZ BERNIK (1933–2016) is a world renowned Slovenian painter. He graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts, and later became a professor in Ljubljana. He was a member of the ‘Art Group 69’ and exhibited in all group exhibitions. He was a member of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts and became a correspondent member of the Academy of St. Luka in Rome in 1993, and a member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts in 1996.
Bernik was a prolific and versatile artist who achieved remarkable achievements in painting, sculpture, graphic design, illustrations, tapestries, and even wrote poetry. He had over 60 solo exhibitions, and he represented Yugoslavia at the Venice Biennale three times. He won numerous domestic and international awards, and his work is in prestigious collections and museums in Europe, America and Japan.
